Co-Existent Tuberculosis and Carcinoma of the Lung

THE co-existence of pulmonary tuberculosis and bronchial carcinoma has been commented on many times and many authors have assessed the relative aetiological importance of the one to the other. It has, for example, been held (Rokitansky, 1854) that tuberculosis and carcinoma were antagonistic, whereas Ewing (1931) believed that tuberculosis was the main aetiological factor in carcinoma of the lung. A recent routine post-mortem showed both conditions and this led me to undertake a study of the records of the Department in an attempt to assess the significance of their co-existence.
